As a member of the Surgical Program team, you will have an opportunity to participate in providing care to a diverse group of patients and families. 6 East is a fast-paced surgical unit that supports all surgical services at the site. This role is an integral part of our care team providing leadership, mentorship and education to patients, families and colleagues.

Description: The Assistant Head Nurse (AHN) provides effective clinical leadership, functional supervision and, as needed, performs front line Registered Nursing duties. The AHN promotes and models leadership competencies by demonstrating good judgement and critical thinking skills, and developing and maintaining strong nursing practice in the designated scope of practice. The AHN fosters team effectiveness, demonstrating excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, communicating effectively and seeking to resolve staff issues. The AHN develops a supportive environment for multidisciplinary learning. This position is covered by the terms and conditions of the UNA Collective Agreement.

Required Qualifications: Graduate of a Registered Nurse program or recognized equivalent required. Active registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurse of Alberta (CRPNA) is required. Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (Level C) required. Additional Required Qualifications:At least three (3) years of recent (within the last two years) and related inpatient surgical nursing experience (general surgery/orthopedic surgery) is required. At least one (1) year of recent (within the last two years) and related inpatient surgical charge nurse experience is required. Must be able to independently take a patient assignment as required and respond to a code blue or rapid response. Must stand for long periods and walk for extended periods of time shift. Regularly required to lift in excess of ten (10) pounds. Must have excellent problem-solving skills and communication skills (written and verbal). Must be proficient working in a computerized environment including MS Office Suite. Committed to safe, effective and ethical patient care and work practices. Must stand for long periods and walk for extended periods of time shift. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Excellent organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications:Must have excellent problem-solving skills and communication skills (written and verbal). Committed to safe, effective and ethical patient care and work practices. Must be self-motivated, self-directed and able to implement resolutions with a positive reinforcement style. Ability to work in a fast paced, highly stressful environment. Able to deescalate situations and have strong conflict resolution skills. Ability to participate as an effective member of and lead the multidisciplinary team.
