Your Opportunity:

As an Assistant Head Nurse of a 24 bed orthopedic unit, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of Covenant Health.

Description:

The Assistant Head Nurse (AHN) provides effective clinical leadership, functional supervision and, as needed, performs front line Registered Nursing duties. The AHN promotes and models leadership competencies by demonstrating good judgement and critical thinking skills, and developing and maintaining strong nursing practice in the designated scope of practice. The AHN fosters team effectiveness, demonstrating excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, communicating effectively and seeking to resolve staff issues. The AHN develops a supportive environment for multidisciplinary learning. This position is covered by the terms and conditions of the UNA Collective Agreement.

Required Qualifications:

Graduate of a Registered Nurse program or recognized equivalent required. Active registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurse of Alberta (CRPNA) is required. Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (Level C) required.

Additional Required Qualifications:

At least three (3) years of recent (within the last two years) and related inpatient surgical nursing experience (general surgery / orthopedic surgery) is required. At least one (1) year of recent (within the last two years) and related inpatient surgical charge nurse experience is required. Must be able to independently take a patient assignment as required and respond to a code blue or rapid response. Must stand for long periods and walk for extended periods of time shift. Regularly required to lift in excess of ten (10) pounds. Must be proficient working in a computerized environment including MS Office Suite. Must be flexible and tactful with a positive reinforcement style. Must be self-motivated, self-directed and able to implement resolutions.

Preferred Qualifications:

Committed to safe, effective and ethical patient care and work practices. Experience with elder friendly care. Able to de-escalate tense situations and have strong conflict resolution skills. Excellent organizational skills.
