Your Opportunity:
The MCH is currently looking for an AHN to lead and support the Operating Room team. The MCH OR is a fast-paced, high-acuity unit that provides care for patients undergoing both scheduled and emergency procedures, including surgeries in General Surgery, Gynecology, Orthopedics, Trauma, Plastics, Urology, and the Craniofacial Care Program. As an AHN, you will provide daily clinical and operational leadership to support high-quality care, in line with unit policies and the portfolio’s strategic goals. Strong organizational and leadership skills are key to managing the workflow of a busy surgical suite with 10 operating rooms. Success in this role requires effective communication, collaboration, and independent problem-solving in a fast-paced, team-based environment. As the AHN, you will coordinate staff and resources within the Surgical Suite, provide direction and task assignment, and work closely with the broader MCH Surgery Portfolio. This role requires strong communication, adaptability, conflict resolution, and leadership skills. You will serve as a clinical leader and role model, integrating evidence-based practices and fostering a respectful, supportive team environment. The AHN supports staff development, represents Operative Services, and contributes to quality improvement and a collaborative workplace culture. You will create staff assignments, manage patient flow, support OR staff as a clinical resource and advocate; provide frontline nursing care as needed; lead quality care initiatives and support operational priorities; collaborate with the CNE to promote patient-centered, evidence-based care; use clinical judgment to resolve complex issues across teams and departments; apply critical thinking and nursing processes to support patients and families; use & navigate Connect Care efficiently & identify and act on opportunities for improvement.

Description: The Assistant Head Nurse (AHN) provides effective clinical leadership, functional supervision and, as needed, performs front line Registered Nursing duties. The AHN promotes and models leadership competencies by demonstrating good judgement and critical thinking skills, and developing and maintaining strong nursing practice in the designated scope of practice. The AHN fosters team effectiveness, demonstrating excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, communicating effectively and seeking to resolve staff issues. The AHN develops a supportive environment for multidisciplinary learning. This position is covered by the terms and conditions of the UNA Collective Agreement.

Required Qualifications: Graduate of a Registered Nurse program or recognized equivalent required. Active registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurse of Alberta (CRPNA) is required. Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (Level C) required.
Additional Required Qualifications:Active registration as a Registered Nurse, and member in good standing with CRNA. Post secondary degree in Nursing (BN, BScN). Completion of a Peri-operative nursing course/certificate. Minimum of 3 years recent experience working in a high acuity OR. Experience to be current, or at most, within the last year. Minimum 2 years of Leadership experience as an AHN, Team Leader, Charge Nurse or CNE. Experience to be current, or at most, within the last year. Strong organizational and leadership skills, with proven ability in decision-making, coaching, teaching, and building confidence in others. Physically capable of standing and walking for extended periods of time, performing repetitive movements throughout the shift, lifting up to 20 lbs, and pushing/pulling up to 50 lbs of force. Advanced computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Office, Powerpoint & Connect Care.
Preferred Qualifications:Canadian Nursing Association (CNA) certification – CPN(C), Accredited certification in Perioperative Nursing, Master’s degree in Nursing, leadership or healthcare related field. Working knowledge of surgical care pathway. Working knowledge of MDRD, PACU & Surgical Dayward. Experience collecting, working with and analyzing data.
