Description:

Reporting to the Corporate Director, Ethics and Diversity, the Clinical Ethicist is responsible for providing clinical ethics leadership within acute care, continuing care, and primary care health environments, informed by and aligned with the Catholic moral and ethical tradition, and based on a consultation team model approach. The Clinical Ethicist has primary accountabilities that include administrative and leadership support to Covenant’s clinical ethics committees, consultation service, and the Covenant Ethics and Discernment Centre, in collaboration with other colleagues. They will be responsible for clinical ethics consultation, education, policy development, ethics quality assurance, and research initiatives. The Clinical Ethicist will also support organizational ethics consultation and Mission Discernments at the direction of the Vice President or Corporate Director. This position is non-unionized.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of a master’s degree in Christian or Catholic ethics, moral theology/spirituality, philosophical ethics or a related discipline involving ethical reflection and decision making. Clinical residency in ethics or other related clinical formation involving ethical reflection and decision making. Minimum five (5) years of experience in ethics leadership and consultation experience in a health care environment or related clinical role involving ethical reflection and decision making.


Additional Required Qualifications:

Demonstrated knowledge of the Catholic moral tradition, including Catholic Social Teaching. Demonstrated knowledge of administrative processes and related organizational ethics issues within a large health care environment. Demonstrated understanding and commitment to Covenant’s mission, vision, values and ethical framework. Demonstrated lead-without-authority experience, including facilitation of cross-functional working groups and coaching peers/champions. Demonstrated discretion with confidential information and sensitivity about health care issues within a Catholic setting. Ability to communicate effectively across written and verbal channels. Ability to work effectively within a team environment to develop and achieve shared goals and objectives. Ability to engage staff, physicians, volunteers and other stakeholders in moving the clinical ethics service forward. Knowledge of current literature related to health care ethics.


Preferred Qualifications:

Doctorate in Catholic theology or moral theology with an expertise in health care ethics. Progressive leadership roles in clinical and/or organizational ethics. Deep understanding of the theological underpinnings of Catholic faith, practice, ethical traditions and theology. Demonstrated record of leadership in establishing linkages and partnerships. Academic faculty appointment to help advance Covenant Health’s national leadership in mission and value-add contribution to the health system.
