Your Opportunity:

As a Consultant in Physician Experience, Development & Quality at Covenant Health, you will play a pivotal role in advancing quality improvement and strengthening Covenant’s commitment to safe, high-quality care. You support patients, families, physicians, staff, and leaders in navigating concerns related to care and service, ensuring they are addressed fairly, respectfully, and promptly. Many concerns are complex, sensitive, or trauma related, requiring sound judgment, discretion, and compassion. In this collaborative role, you work closely with operational, medical, and senior leaders to review feedback, initiate timely and consistent reviews, and guide resolution in accordance with legislation and organizational policy. You foster trust through strong relationships, open communication, and by increasing awareness of the concerns process among employees, medical staff, and physicians. You may facilitate meetings, contribute to quality improvement initiatives, and share learnings that support system wide improvement and reinforce a culture of safety. Success in this role requires exceptional skills in de-escalation, critical thinking, problem solving, time management, and clear, compassionate communication. You bring the ability to analyze complex situations, navigate emotionally charged interactions, and support teams in finding fair and constructive paths forward—helping strengthen the physician, patient, and employee experience and the overall quality of care within Covenant Health.

Description:

The Consultant, Physician Experience, Development & Quality, leads complex, sensitive, and high risk investigations across Covenant Health, in alignment with the Medical Staff Bylaws, policy, and legislation. The role requires demonstrated competency managing cases across adult, pediatric, and senior populations, navigating conflict in diverse clinical and community settings, and understanding Alberta’s health system and feedback processes. Concerns may be clinical, ethical, procedural, or technical, requiring independent judgment, emotional resilience, and the ability to manage high conflict interactions. The Consultant promotes high quality physician documentation and incorporates CH’s mission and ethical principles in all resolutions. Acting with diplomacy, discretion, and objectivity, the Consultant responds to feedback; provides coaching and education; coordinates and conducts investigations, including inter departmental and inter jurisdictional matters; and advises Medical Leaders on resolution strategies, performance management, and restorative practices. The role manages organizational risk and reputation, triggers escalations when patient safety or legal exposure is identified, and ensures rigorous documentation and reporting. Working closely with physicians, Medical Leaders, Patient Relations, Legal, Quality, and Analytics, the Consultant implements, monitors, and evaluates quality improvement initiatives; analyzes trends; develops tools and resources; represents Medical Affairs on quality committees; and contributes to portfolio wide process improvements. Strong leadership and strategic collaboration support system wide improvements and province wide initiatives.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences (i.e., Nursing, Social Work, Health promotion) Human Administration, Social Sciences. Minimum two (2) of progressively responsible experience dealing with health care professionals, complaints or administrative law processes.


Additional Required Qualifications:

The role requires strong knowledge of quality improvement, change and concerns management, along with experience in policy development, implementation, data analytics, research, and risk mitigation. Candidates must understand patient care delivery and organizational structures, and demonstrate skill in conflict resolution, negotiation, facilitation, and handling complex clinical, technical, and ethical issues. Exceptional written and verbal communication, professionalism, and the ability to build rapport with diverse stakeholders—including physicians, leaders, and employees—are essential. The position requires discretion, impartiality, diplomacy, and the ability to objectively assess complaints, anticipate and mitigate risks, and interpret legal documents. Strong listening, observation, interviewing, and ethical problem-solving skills are required, as well as the ability to influence change, manage multiple concurrent priorities, work independently, and exercise sound judgment. Candidates must demonstrate initiative, creativity, flexibility, customer service excellence, teamwork, and the awareness to engage Legal, Information & Privacy, HRBP, and Employee Relations when needed. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, EPIC, Tableau, Teams, and web-based tools is required.


Preferred Qualifications:

Masters’ preparation such as in HR, MBA or MHA. Formal project management training and experience.
