Your Opportunity:

The Palliative Care Unit (PCU) provides premier palliative services in Southern Alberta. It consists of 10 palliative care beds that are focused on providing end-of-life care. This unit primarily admits patients whose life expectancy is less than 3 months or require optimization of pain management due to their palliative condition. HCAs are part of the greater PCU team that includes RNs, LPNs, Occupational Therapists, Registered Dietitians, Pharmacists, Social Worker, Unit Clerks and Family Physicians. In addition, the PCU department hosts 8 Long Term Care - Complex beds with their primary function caring for individuals who require more intensive care in a residential setting. As a member of the PCU team, the HCA works under the supervision of RNs and LPNs, collaborating with the nursing staff to provide the most comprehensive end-of-life care. The HCA performs various personal care duties, including but not limited to, personal care, toileting, transferring, mobilizing, dressing and feeding. In addition, the HCA helps maintain dignity of our patients by facilitating independence in a dignified way. The HCA continually monitors our patients and clearly communicates concerns to the RNs and LPNs. The HCA supports the patient's end-of-life journey through positive and encouraging interactions. This HCA position will also be orientated to other departments in order to be able to provide relief, if required. The HCA is responsible for the provision of care in accordance with established standards, and the Mission, Vision, Values, policies and procedures of Covenant Health. Required Qualifications:

Required Qualifications: Active status on the Alberta Health Care Aide Directory. Students currently enrolled in an approved Alberta nursing program who have successfully completed: 1) a continuing care or medicine unit placement, and 2) either Year 1 of a practical nursing program; or Year 2 of a baccalaureate nursing or psychiatric nursing program, and 3) knowledge and experience with medication assistance; will be considered. Candidates who are In Progress on the Directory may be considered. Candidates will be required to provide proof of Active enrolment on the Directory. Physically able to assist with all aspects of patient/resident care and transport, e.g. walking, standing, bending and lifting. Must be able to understand written and verbal directions in English.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Minimum of 6 months of experience in palliative care, hospice, or a related healthcare setting. Basic understanding of palliative care principles, including symptom management and end-of-life support. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build positive relationships with patients and their families. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to work collaboratively within a healthcare team. Ability to demonstrate empathy, patience, and professionalism in all interactions.

Preferred Qualifications:

Additional training or certification in Palliative Care or Geriatric Care (e.g., Certified Palliative Health Care Aide). Experience with electronic health record (EHR) systems, such as Connect Care. Knowledge of Alberta’s best practices and regulations related to palliative care. Skills in providing emotional and spiritual support and managing complex patient needs.
