This is your opportunity to join the vibrant health care team at the Misericordia Community Hospital where you will provide culturally sensitive and appropriate care and support to Indigenous patients, while contributing to the development of a robust Indigenous Care Program. Guided by Covenant Health’s mission, vision, and values, the Indigenous Care Liaison (ICL) provides holistic care for Indigenous people and their families, educates health care providers about respectful relationships and health care for Indigenous people, while building understanding and trust between Indigenous people and health care providers. The ICL will foster a spirit of hospitality for Indigenous people within Covenant Health and act as a bridge builder between Indigenous patients/families and care team staff to support culturally appropriate care. Respecting the historical impacts of colonization, traditional Indigenous beliefs and cultures, the diversity of many beliefs among Indigenous peoples, and the complex Western medical approaches to health, the ICL establishes responsive, sensitive, and consultative relationships that enable trust and healing among peoples of very diverse world views and approaches to health and healing. This position reports to the Manager, Spiritual Care Seniors & Indigenous Liaisons.

This position is covered by the terms and conditions of the HSAA Paramedical Professional/Technical Collective Agreement.

Required Qualifications:

Required Qualifications: Diploma in humanities, social science, or clinical discipline.

Additional Required Qualifications:

3-5 years lived experience: traditional Indigenous knowledge and earned understanding about Indigenous cultural beliefs, values, customs, traditions, healing ways, ceremonies, traditional medicine, protocols.Experience (Non-traditional): Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-cultural environment and understanding of the needs of patients from First Nations, Metis or Inuit settlements and community resources. Experience (Traditional): · Guided ongoing development with Traditional Elders over the course of many years. Learning about Indigenous cultural identity that is recognized by other Indigenous people and is respectful in a health care environment. Knowledge of how to respond to diverse cultural needs of a wide variety of Indigenous people. Knowledge about the effects of colonization and residential schools, including intergenerational trauma. Openness to continually learning and professional development. Knowledge of and comfort with computer applications such as Microsoft Office. Must demonstrate excellent critical thinking skills and have strong problem-solving abilities. Must remain current regarding service options available including detailed knowledge of Indigenous Communities.

Preferred Qualifications:

3-5 years’ experience in healthcare; if part of a registered profession, registration in good standing with applicable governing body. Experience in conflict resolution. Experience in community development and working within a holistic approach to health. Commitment to working as part of a collaborative care team. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills. Broad knowledge of federal, provincial, regional and local community resources.
