Your Opportunity:

The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) is an advanced practice nurse who provides specialized care and management of neonates within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). With advanced education at a minimum of Master of Nursing level, the NNP possesses clinical expertise within their stream of practice and act as an independent and autonomous practitioner who contributes to quality collaborative interprofessional patient care through advanced clinical practices, leadership, consultations, referrals, education and research. Reporting to the Senior Program Officer of Women’s and Child Health, the NNP practices within a dynamic interdisciplinary healthcare team while working collaboratively with patients and families as partners in care. The NNP participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of policies, procedures and standards of care consistent with current literature, research and evidence-based practice.

Description:

Reporting to the Senior Director, Operations or Program Manager, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) is employed in a variety of settings across the continuum of care including acute care and continuing care. The NP uses an evidence-informed holistic approach that emphasizes the nursing professions' values, expertise and education. The majority of time is spent in clinical practice where the NP role includes, but is not limited to, diagnosing and managing common and complex health conditions, promoting health and preventing illness/injury, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, prescribing pharmaceuticals, medical devises and other therapies and performing procedures, interventions and/or treatments. The NP performs restricted activities within their scope of practice as defined by Schedule 24 of the Health Professions Act, the Registered Nurses Profession Regulations, and the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). In some clinical settings, the NP is considered the most responsible provider. This position is covered by the terms and conditions of the AUNP Collective Agreement.

Required Qualifications:

Successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner program at a Master of Nursing level. Must possess relevant and recent clinical expertise within stream of practice. Must be eligible for licensure with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) as a Nurse Practitioner. Must be appropriately licensed with the clinical practice stream relevant to area of clinical employment.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Completion of a recognized Nurse Practitioner Program in the Neonatal stream. Active or eligible for registration as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta with practice permit indicating Child Population (Neonatal) stream of practice. The Nurse Practitioner is responsible for ensuring that his/her registration is current and valid. A minimum of 3 years current NICU experience. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Provider. Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Commitment to Covenant Health Vision, Mission, and Values.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team. Ability to function independently. Application and knowledge of current research. Ongoing interest in research. Experience in a wide range of assessment, treatment and therapeutic interventions, health promotion, diagnostic procedures, and follow-up care in the community. Must understand and practice within full scope of their knowledge in an interdisciplinary team environment.
