Your Opportunity:

The New 85 million dollar Misericordia (MCH) Emergency Department (ED) opened in Fall 2023, is a large urban ED within Edmonton, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Reporting to the manager of the ED, the Orthopedic Technician (ORT) works in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team to provide care for patients presenting to the ED. The ORT assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates care for emergency patients with a specialized focus on orthopedic patients. Interventions such applying/adjusting and removing casts/splints/traction equipment as well as assisting with orthopedic reductions will be required. In this role, you may be required to work in all areas of Emergency at the discretion of the unit manager and/or charge nurse. The ORT may also be required to provide orthopedic care to hospital inpatients after hours as required. The ORT is an integral stakeholder to the Misericordia Emergency. Description:

Description: The Registered Orthopedic Technician utilizes expert comprehensive skills to assess, plan and coordinate the evaluation of the patient using nursing knowledge and application and removal of casts, splints and traction apparatus. The incumbent will provide quality patient care through implementation, coordination, consultation, education and liaising with the interdisciplinary team. The Registered Orthopedic Technician acts as a resource to other health care professionals. This position is covered by the terms and conditions of the AUPE Auxiliary Nursing Collective Agreement.

Required Qualifications:

Required Qualifications: Graduate of a Practical Nursing program or recognized equivalent required. Active registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) specifying the Advanced Orthopedic area of specialized practice is required. Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (Level C) required.

Additional Required Qualifications:

1-2 years of applicable experience (note: candidates with less experience may be considered). Ability to work in a fast paced, highly stressful environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Recent experience in a large urban ED preferred. Advanced practice courses preferred. CLPNA Restricted Activities Modules: Administering Diagnostic Imaging Contrast Agents, Fetal Heart Monitoring, Non-Ionizing Radiation, Administering Blood and Blood Products: Transfusion, Dispending of Medications and Immunization preferred (required upon hire).
