Your Opportunity:

As a Registered Psychiatric Nurse/ Registered Nurse in the Emergency Mental Health department (EMH), you will provide holistic assessments within a recovery model framework for patients presenting in psychiatric or psychosocial crisis. You will work as part of an interdisciplinary team in the Emergency Department to assess the patient, determine the level of illness and risk to self or others, and make recommendations to Emergency Physicians and Psychiatrists regarding the plan of care for the patient. As an EMH RN/RPN, you will collaborate with stakeholders and organize referrals to community services based on client need. multidisciplinary team. The RPN/RN participates in nursing assessments and interventions, care planning, implements prescribed treatments, administers medications, monitors and evaluates treatments, and documents patient care and treatment response. The RN/RPN facilitates patient and family education and discharge planning. Patient care is our priority as the team contributes their expertise towards stabilization of the individual experiencing a mental health crisis and/or substance use.


The Registered Nurse/Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RN/RPN) participates in nursing assessments and interventions, care planning, implementing prescribed treatments, administering medications, evaluating treatments, and monitoring/documenting treatment progress and patient/resident response. Acting as an advocate, coordinator and liaison for the patient/resident, the RN/RPN identifies needs and sets priorities in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team. The RN/RPN facilitates patient/resident and family education and discharge planning, and may be required to act in a charge nurse capacity. The RN/RPN is responsible for the provision of care in accordance with established standards, and the Mission, Vision, Values, policies and procedures of Covenant Health. This position is covered by the terms and conditions of the UNA Collective Agreement.

Required Qualifications:

Graduate of a RN or RPN program or recognized equivalent required. Active registration with the CRPNA and/or CRNA required. Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (Level C) required. Additional Required Qualifications:

1 Year of Emergency Mental Health experience. 1 year of Addictions and/or Mental Health experience within the last 3 years. New grads who have completed a final preceptorship in an Addiction and/or Mental Health site may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

Certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) preferred. Nursing experience in an acute care setting is preferred. Knowledge of the Addiction and Mental Health resources in Edmonton and surrounding area preferred. Knowledge of verbal de-escalation techniques preferred. Knowledge of the Mental Health Act preferred. Experience in various risk assessment i.e. Suicide risk, Homicidal risk, VAST, Domestic Violence screening an asset..
