Your Opportunity:

Reporting to the Program Manager -Care, the Care Manager (CM) acts as an advocate, coordinator and liaison for the resident in the planning and organizing of day-to-day operations. The CM coordinates, directs, and monitors resident care and activities of the members of the team. The CM, in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, is accountable for the delivery of quality care and strategic planning for the nursing department. This individual provides leadership for the delivery of safe resident care in accordance with the Standards of Nursing Practice, as well as is in accordance with the mission, vision and values and the policies and procedures of Covenant Health. The CM is accountable for the clinical management, administration, education, research, and professional responsibilities pertaining to the nursing unit. The incumbent provides supervision to Assistant Head Nurses (AHN’s), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN’s) and Health Care Aides (HCA’s). The Care Manager may assume responsibility for the Nursing Department in the absence of the Program Manager -Care. Please note, this facility provides Long Term Care (LTC) or Designated Supportive Living (DSL) services and by Order of the Chief Medical Officer of Health, many Covenant Health employees are required to work only at a single LTC/DSL site for the remainder of the pandemic. If you are successful on a position with Covenant Health, the hiring manager will confirm if you will be required to work at only one LTC/DSL site in Alberta.

Management: Leads staff meetings through participation, contribution, support and problem solving; Recognizes and rewards staff performance; Annual performance review; Ensures adequate staffing levels maintained; Authorizes overtime, education days, vacation, stats and leaves of absence (LOA) in accordance with the collective agreements and Policies and Procedures; Uses leadership skills and management principles to effect change towards improved resident care; Assists the interdisciplinary team members in collaborative strategic planning and decision making; Attends, participates, and contributes to quality assurance, research, management, and other committees or meetings; Participates actively in the implementation of regional initiatives applicable to the program site; Demonstrates ultimate accountability for daily management of the unit; Works closely with residents/families to address areas of concern in a timely fashion; Assists the interview process of new hires. Provides staff with appropriate opportunities to develop leadership skills and to continue to develop as a team; Promotes use of current research in Nursing Facilitates research-based practices. Provides input into budget process and rationale regarding variances; Provides input into submissions regarding minor and capital equipment. Ensures that program specific risk management activities and preventative programs for control of environmental and personal risks are developed, implemented and evaluated.

Required Qualifications:

Graduate from an approved School of Nursing is required. BScN is preferred (or an equivalent combination of experience and education). Five (5) years recent nursing experience. Care Manager experience required. Current knowledge in medicine and geriatrics. Heart & Stroke Foundation (Level C) Health Care Provider required. Current registration with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta (CRPNA).

Strong interpersonal; and communication skills. Strong leadership skills. Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills. Exhibits strong clinical knowledge and skill in nursing. Computer skills (Microsoft Office, ESP etc.).
