The Unit Manager is responsible for the overall leadership and day-to-day operations of the NICU, ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality, and patient- and family-centered care. This role provides direct supervision and guidance to clinical and support staff, fostering a collaborative, respectful, and high-performing team environment. Working closely with physicians and interdisciplinary partners, the Unit Manager supports coordinated care delivery, effective patient flow, and positive patient and family experiences. As a key leader on the unit, the Unit Manager is accountable for staff performance, development, and engagement through ongoing coaching, mentoring, and performance management. The role supports recruitment and retention efforts, promotes continuous learning, and ensures staff are equipped to meet clinical and operational expectations. In a fast-paced and complex environment, the Unit Manager applies sound judgment and critical thinking to manage competing priorities, resolve issues, and support clinical decision-making. The position also plays an important role in advancing quality improvement and patient safety initiatives, monitoring performance metrics, and identifying opportunities to enhance care delivery and unit operations. Accountability includes managing staffing, scheduling, and workforce planning, as well as overseeing financial and physical resources to ensure efficient and responsible use. The Unit Manager contributes to strategic and operational planning, supports organizational priorities, and models the mission, vision, and values of Covenant Health in all aspects of leadership and care delivery. This role is essential in creating a positive, engaged workplace culture while balancing clinical excellence with operational effectiveness. This position is non-unionized.

The successful candidate is a graduate of a recognized Registered Nursing program or a graduate of a recognized healthcare profession with a current professional designation in a regulated health discipline, holding current registration in good standing with the appropriate regulatory college, such as the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA), where applicable. A minimum of three years of recent leadership experience in an acute care setting, with NICU experience considered an asset. The candidate must hold current Basic Life Support (BLS Level C) certification.
Additional Required Qualifications:
This role requires strong leadership, communication and conflict resolution skills, as well as the proven ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-stress environment. The ideal candidate demonstrates sound critical thinking and decision-making abilities, with the capacity to manage complex situations and support safe, high-quality patient care and brings experience with staffing, scheduling and workforce planning, as well as knowledge of quality improvement methodologies and patient safety practices.
Preferred Qualifications:
A Baccalaureate degree in Nursing with leadership experience in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Experience working within a unionized environment and an understanding of collective agreements.
