Your Opportunity:
The New 85 Million dollar Misericordia (MCH) Emergency Department (ED) opened in Fall 2023, is a large urban ED within Edmonton, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Reporting to the manager of the ED, The Assistant Head Nurse (AHN) has leadership and clinical qualities that will support patients, staff and the interdisciplinary team. The AHN coordinates the patient care plan and directs overall patient flow into and out of the ED. The AHN works closely with internal and external partners as well as patients and families. We are looking for RNs who possess a passion for leading, place a high value on teamwork and learning and demonstrate excellence in the charge nurse role and supporting patient flow. Candidates should demonstrate proven interest in quality improvement and willingness to participate in department development initiatives. The AHN is an integral stakeholder in the MCH ED and works in a fast paced, highly stressful environment.

Description: The Assistant Head Nurse (AHN) provides effective clinical leadership, functional supervision and, as needed, performs front line Registered Nursing duties. The AHN promotes and models leadership competencies by demonstrating good judgement and critical thinking skills, and developing and maintaining strong nursing practice in the designated scope of practice. The AHN fosters team effectiveness, demonstrating excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, communicating effectively and seeking to resolve staff issues. The AHN develops a supportive environment for multidisciplinary learning. This position is covered by the terms and conditions of the UNA Collective Agreement.

Required Qualifications: Graduate of a Registered Nurse program or recognized equivalent required. Active registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurse of Alberta (CRPNA) is required. Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (Level C) required. Additional Required Qualifications:2 years of clinical ED experience required (note: alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered). Recent ED charge nurse experience required.
Preferred Qualifications:Recent AHN experience in a large urban ED preferred. Emergency Nursing Certificate (ENC) preferred. Advanced practice courses preferred (ACLS, PALS, TNCC, etc.). Leadership courses preferred. ED committee involvement preferred.
