Your Opportunity:

Reporting to the Corporate Director, Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), the Epidemiologist is accountable for describing and investigating the distribution and causes of healthcare-associated infections while maintaining a centralized repository for surveillance data. They participate in developing strategies, deploying various surveillance and reporting requirements for preventing and controlling infections. Responsibilities include: Surveillance. Risk Management and Patient Safety. Education, Teaching, Mentorship and Leadership. The Epidemiologist will provide epidemiological and statistical support for surveillance data, investigating of hospital-associated outbreaks and emerging diseases, participate in identifying health and safety risks and work with various teams to solve complex health system and disease challenges. Provide evaluation of IPC interventions and incorporating surveillance information into practice and education in Covenant Health. The Epidemiologist is a lead member of the IPC and Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs (ASP). This includes but may not be limited to providing support directly to initiatives lead by IPC and ASP.

Required Qualifications:

Master’s degree in public health or science with a focus in Epidemiology. 3 - 5 years of analytics experience within healthcare systems. Strong statistical and analytics skills including previous experience with SQL, Python, Tableau and Snowflake.


Additional Required Qualifications:

The ability to analyze, visualize, summarize and interpret complex epidemiological data. High levels of numeracy and data literacy, combined with deep analytical skills. Accuracy and a methodical approach to work in a time efficient manner. Problem-solving skills to identify and find solutions to day-to-day practical and technical issues. Excellent oral and written communication skills in order to share ideas, methods, and key findings clearly and succinctly. Experience creating and delivering presentations to a varied group of internal and external stakeholders. Knowledge of applicable regulatory considerations as it relates to the utilization and access of health information from a research, operational and legislative perspective. Ability to work independently and guide own work. Ability to act as a member of a multidisciplinary team for information sharing and development of informal educational materials for the internal team. Ability to foster strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to build a network of resources. Ability to exercise a high degree confidentiality and professionalism. Experience in conflict management to help deliver viable solutions for all stakeholders. Able to multi-task to manage a range of varied tasks. Adaptable and flexible on day-to-day activities due to the fluid nature of priorities. Able to manage timelines to meet deadlines.


Preferred Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Epidemiology, Health Sciences or applicable discipline preferred. 5 - 10 years of analytics experience within the Alberta Health Care system. Project management experience. Research experience. Previous familiarity with Alberta Health data and/or Canadian Institute for Health Information data. Previous experience in IPC and/or ASP.
