Your Opportunity:

Reporting to the Corporate Director, Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), the Corporate Infection Control Practitioner (ICP) is a highly motivated, self-directed professional, and key member of the IPC team responsible for the delivery and maintenance of the highest standards of Infection Prevention and Control practices to ensure patient safety across all Covenant Health Sites. The Corporate ICP serves as a role model to promote the goals of the IPC program within the broader context of Covenant Health’s mission, vision, and values. This position is responsible for providing support to other ICP team members and sites, leading projects and program initiatives to align with the provincial IPC direction and ensuring that effective prevention and control activities are implemented across the spectrum of care that are specific to the practice setting, and the population being served. The primary accountabilities of this position include ensuring current infection control best practices are being met; ensuring select sentinel and significant health care infections, events and trends are promptly identified and addressed; providing and analyzing data to maintain current standards contributing to quality improvement; consulting and liaising with community health agencies; as well as consulting and collaborating with stakeholders. Other key functions include committee participation with internal and external stakeholders, facilitating change through interpretation and application of standards, and providing and developing new clinical practice recommendations for Infection Control. Every ICP is responsible to comply with all professional regulatory bodies and Covenant Health policies and procedures.

The ICP is responsible for complying with all professional licensing regulatory bodies and Covenant Health policies and procedures. The ICP provides leadership and direction for IPC initiatives throughout the organization, as well as orientations, in-service programs, and clinical consultation to individual staff development initiatives in Infection Prevention and Control. This position is covered by the terms and conditions of the HSAA Collective Agreement.

Required Qualifications:

Baccalaureate degree in Nursing or other health related science. Currently licensed with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA), College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA), or an applicable professional regulatory body. Completion of basic Infection Prevention and Control training course, or commitment to complete this in first year of practice. Three (3) years of related experience in health care either acute care and/or continuing care setting. Heart and Stroke Foundation Basic Life Support (BLS).

Additional Required Qualifications:

6-8 years’ experience within healthcare. 3-5 years as an Infection Control Professional. Project Management experience. ICP following 2 years of practice, obtain and maintain requirements for Certification in Infection Control (CIC) from the Certification Board of Infection Control (CBIC). Heart and Stroke Foundation BLS Level C – Health Care Provider. Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills required; must be able to exercise appropriate judgement and diplomacy in all forms of communication. Must possess knowledge and skills for conflict resolution. The ability to navigate high stakes conversations and lead teams is a must. The ability to adapt to and support change initiatives. Professional knowledge and skills combined with well-developed communication and interpersonal skills to engage others and influence their practice and behavior. Knowledge and skills of patient care practices required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in a Nursing or other health related science. Experience leading teams, working groups or projects. Change management experience is an asset. Experience conducting research and developing educational materials and policies. Knowledge and skills in adult education is an asset.
