Your Opportunity:

The ICU at the Misericordia Hospital is a fast-paced and dynamic unit with a welcoming interdisciplinary team who support our critically ill patients from all walks of life. Our staff utilize their critical thinking skills daily to provide exemplary care for our clients. We provide nursing care, education, and support to our ICU patients, and run as part of a hospital-wide Rapid Response and Code Team. The ICU RN provides safe and competent care for patients with various deficits and co-morbidities using critical care knowledge and principles of family centered care. The RN participates actively in patient care decision making, particularly within the multi-disciplinary team on patient care rounds. They encourage patients to actively participate in their own care, facilitating their efforts to do so effectively and safely. The RN communicates changes to the interdisciplinary team in an effective and timely manner. Staff are supported to annually recertify their critical care competencies, ensuring that they are up to date on the most current policies and procedures.


The Registered Nurse (RN) participates in nursing assessments and interventions, care planning, implementing prescribed treatments, administering medications, evaluating treatments, and monitoring/documenting treatment progress and patient/resident response. Acting as an advocate, coordinator and liaison for the patient/resident, the RN identifies needs and sets priorities in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team. The RN facilitates patient/resident and family education and discharge planning, and may be required to act in a charge nurse capacity. The RN is responsible for the provision of care in accordance with established standards, and the Mission, Vision, Values, policies and procedures of Covenant Health.

Required Qualifications:

Graduate of a Registered Nurse program or recognized equivalent required. Active registration with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) required. Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (Level C) required.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Interested candidates must be a graduate of a Registered Nurse program or recognized equivalent as well as have active registration with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta. They must also have current Basic Life Support-Health Care Provider. Other required qualities include effective communication and organizational skills, proven by the ability to communicate changes in patient condition in a clear and timely manner. Along with sound assessment skills, the successful candidate will also have strong problem solving and critical thinking skills, in order to recognize, prioritize and anticipate patient needs. Candidates will have completed a Critical Care Course recognized by AHS/COV, and/or must pass a Critical Care Challenge exam. Candidates without previous critical care experience may be considered and if selected, will be required to undergo the Critical Care Orientation Program (OPACCA), and will be required to sign a 12 month Return of Service commitment agreement.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred candidates will have recent critical care experience, current ACLS and charge nurse experience. Preference will be given to candidates who have completed their final practicum in a critical care area.
